This October 11th, we gathered with 120 amazing girls to celebrate the International Day of the Girl! This year’s theme, “Girls in ICT for Inclusive Digital Transformation,” was all about unlocking the power of technology to empower girls and transform our communities.
Our main goals for the day were to:
-
Talk about the challenges girls face in getting and using technology.
-
Brainstorm creative, tech-based solutions for local problems.
-
Strengthen communication and advocacy skills.
-
And most importantly, to celebrate every girl’s dreams and talents!
A Day Full of Energy and Ideas
The event kicked off at the Tribhuvan G.L.O.W. Club, buzzing with excitement. After dividing into groups, our mentors shared the inspiring story behind IDG (also known as OctobHER!), emphasizing the incredible strength and potential of every girl.
The day was packed with engaging activities:
-
A joyful Welcome Song that set a cheerful tone.
-
An open and caring Girls Talk Box, where girls courageously asked big questions about life and the world.
-
Fun, engaging games like “In and Out,” led by Mentor Bimala, which helped everyone improve their focus, teamwork, and communication.
The Main Event: Imagining a Tech-Powered Future
The highlight was the Team Time – Solution Pitch. Our Glow Girls dug deep into the challenges that limit girls’ access to technology in their communities, identifying issues like negative mindsets, early marriage expectations, and a lack of infrastructure.
But they didn’t stop at the problems! They brainstormed brilliant, practical solutions, including:
-
Pushing for government-provided electricity and infrastructure.
-
Raising awareness among parents about the importance of girls in ICT.
-
Creating more classes, job opportunities, and platforms (like WhatsApp groups) for girls to connect and support each other.
-
Encouraging equality at home so that household responsibilities are shared.
The Big Takeaway
By the end of the day, it was clear that our girls had discovered a powerful truth: they can be agents of change. They learned to work as a team, communicate confidently, and see technology as a tool to transform lives. They left knowing that their voices, ideas, and dreams truly matter.
The celebration wrapped up with group photos, a shared lunch, and heartfelt moments of friendship—a perfect reminder that when girls rise, we all rise!
