Healthy Beginnings, Hopeful Futures

Good health is the foundation of a successful and fulfilling life. As the age-old saying goes, “Health is Wealth”, and for the Rukmini Bahinis, this rings especially true. Many of these bright and ambitious girls come from financially challenged families, where even basic healthcare is often out of reach.

Recognizing this crucial need, the Rukmini Foundation organized a Health Check-Up Camp on May 9, 2025, dedicated to the well-being of our Bahinis — a step towards securing a healthier present and a brighter future.

Purpose of the Health Check-Up:

  •  To identify and treat hidden health issues before they grow serious.

  •  To educate Bahinis on simple yet vital healthy habits that support lifelong wellness.

Health Services Provided:

With the support of trained medical professionals, the camp offered a wide range of essential health checks:

👂 ENT (Ear, Nose, Throat) Check-Up
👀 Eye Examination
🧪 Urine and Blood Tests

🔍 Key Findings and Treatment:

  • Several Bahinis were found to have poor eyesight, which had been affecting their ability to read textbooks and see the board clearly in class. Thanks to the check-up, they are now being treated with glasses and medication, greatly improving their learning experience.

  • One Bahini was diagnosed with a hole in her earwax, a condition that could have led to discomfort and hearing difficulty. She is now undergoing treatment with proper medication.

  • The urine and blood tests helped ensure that each Bahini’s internal health was monitored for early signs of illness.

We Also Taught:

To speak up if they feel sick.

To speak up –  if they are feeling unwell. Kids are often afraid to share their feelings because it may take them away from school activities or cause their families to have to worry about money.

Good hygiene –  We provided simple instructions for handwashing, drinking clean water, and other basic things they can do to stay healthy and avoid having to go to hospital.

Eating healthy – Nutrition is a big challenge, but we shared information about what eating healthy means and how they can avoid things like junk food from stores so that they can stay strong and active.

💡 Beyond Treatment: Raising Awareness

This wasn’t just a medical camp — it was a learning opportunity. The Bahinis were encouraged to speak up about health problems, understand their bodies, and adopt preventive habits that promote long-term well-being.

The Health Check-Up was more than a medical event — it was a gift of care, love, and hope. It reminded the Bahinis that their health matters and that they are supported not just in education but in every aspect.

About Sirjana Waiba

Sirjana first joined the foundation as a scholar starting in the 6th grade and became a mentor soon after the SEE examination. Seeing her interest and her abilities, she was hired as an intern at the Foundation and has served the role of a Didi (older sister/mentor) for the past few years. She inspires Bahinis by sharing her personal experiences and the inspiring stories of the Didis of her time. She speaks strongly against child marriage and inspires to be independent. She learned different activities involved in carrying out programs for girls and women empowerment. She is always ready to take on any assignments like field visits, writing reports, helping with office activities, etc. She continues to attend her classes in the morning and works full time at the Foundation. She is working with the G.LO.W. Club as a Girl Ambassador and writing a curriculum to run the Clubs in schools. She is building her capacity to run different programs, which she shares with her Bahinis. She is mentoring the Arunodaya G.L.O.W. club successfully. She is constantly learning new things from Bahinis and takes inspiration from them.
