December 2012 Newsletter

Happy New Year! A Quick Look Back Before We Look Ahead.

2012 was a big year for us.  We learned to crawl , coo a few syllables, and take some very important baby steps as we turned a year old.  We were able to select 10 girls to support and got all of our programs underway.  The scholars showed off their talents at various shows, and our teams in Nepal and the US held multiple events to raise funds. More importantly, our organization was able to raise awareness about the challenges faced by underprivileged girls in Nepal. As we wish all of our supporters and well-wishers a Happy Holidays and Happy New Year, we invite you to read about what a memorable year one it was for us. Our Program Manager in Nepal also recaps the anniversary celebration in Nepal.

Rukmini Foundation Spreads Holiday Cheer for Barnes & Noble Shoppers

As shoppers made their last minute holiday purchases at Barnes & Noble in Settler’s Ridge in Robinson, PA, the Rukmini Foundation volunteers teamed up to wrap their gifts. The volunteers brought cheer for the customers through excellent gift wrapping skills and bright smiles, but also took the opportunity to educate interested customers about the work that our foundation is doing in Nepal.  The volunteers also included a complimentary bookmark in each wrapped book, which explained the challenges faced by underprivileged girls in Nepal and spread the word about the Rukmini Foundation. We would like to thank all of our excellent volunteers that made this a fun and productive event.

Journey through the Himalayas on the road to teaching:

Lauren was always fascinated by the idea of traveling the world.  Armed with her camera and an open mind, she set out for Nepal.  There she saw, felt and experienced things she never imagined.  Her trip to Nepal not only began her love affair with this tiny nation and its people, but also fueled her passion to teach and help those who need it most.  As an ESL teacher in Pittsburgh, Lauren is not only educating young minds, but also helping new immigrants to the country get acclimated to the country and learn in a foreign environment.  Lauren has taken her passion to educate and help further by joining the board of Rukmini Foundation.  Read about her inspirational journey through her own words and the eyes of her skilled camera lens.

Tiffany Hoffman Joins the Rukmini Board

The foundation is proud to have a PR expert join the board.  With over 12 years of Public Relations experience in both the for-profit and nonprofit sectors, Tiffany will help the foundation raise awareness about the challenges faced by underprivileged girls. Read a bit more about her and her experience in our Meet Our Team page.

Lauren Shuty Joins the Board

Lauren is a teacher who first discovered her love of teaching in — of all places – Nepal. During her 1 year stay in Nepal, Lauren had many adventures, but the experience of teaching underprivileged children in Nepal and seeing their interest in learning inspired her to want to pursue teaching as a profession.  As a board member, she will bring her unique experiences along with her passion for teaching to help us continually improve our quality education program.

Looking Ahead

The Rukmini Foundation has had a very successful first year, and we have so much to be proud of . As we look forward, we will continue to look for areas to  growas an organization and, most importantly, to improve our services for the girls we support.  We are excited about the addition of students for the coming year.  Here are a few things we are working on:

  • Selection Committee Meeting Update – Making the selection process more fair and inclusive of disenfranchised communities.
  • Foundation teaming up with a local football (soccer) team to promote empowerment through education.
  • Arts sale event to raise funds for class of 2013
  • Rolling for Rukmini – bowling fundraiser in Pittsburgh
  • More blogging from board members and volunteers to share their unique perspectives
  • More updates about the girls’ academic progress
  • More updates about events that the Rukmini girls are taking part in
  • And much, much more!

Thank you to all of our supporters and donors for your generosity throughout this year.  We hope that you will continue to support our efforts in the coming year.  There is a lot of work to be done, and together we can make a difference.

On behalf of everyone at Rukmini Foundation, we wish you a very Happy New Year!
